How to maintain your Kydex holster

by Roy Smith 26 Mar 2026

For those who rely on a Kydex holster, regular maintenance is key to ensuring it performs reliably for years to come. Fortunately, caring for Kydex is straightforward and requires only a few simple steps to keep your equipment clean, secure, and ready for use. The most critical areas to focus on are keeping it clean, managing hardware, avoiding heat, and storing it properly.

Cleaning your Kydex holster

This is the most important step for preserving your holster and your firearm's finish. Dirt and grit can accumulate inside the holster and act like sandpaper with every draw and re-holster, causing wear on your gun's surface.

Routine cleaning

  • Wipe it down. For everyday dust and debris, a quick wipe with a damp cloth is often enough.
  • Air dry. Allow the holster to air dry completely before re-holstering your firearm.

Deep cleaning

  • Disassemble. Remove any screws, clips, or retention devices. This ensures you can clean every nook and cranny.
  • Wash with mild soap. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth or a stiff-bristled brush to gently scrub the inside and outside of the holster
  • Rinse thoroughly. Make sure to rinse off all soap residue, as it can attract more dirt over time.
  • Dry completely. Pat the holster dry with a lint-free cloth. You can use a can of compressed air to remove any trapped moisture, especially around grommets.

What to avoid

  • Harsh chemicals: Never use strong solvents or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can degrade the Kydex material.
  • Abrasive brushes: Avoid stiff wire brushes or scouring pads that could scratch the surface of the holster.

Maintaining hardware and retention

The screws and clips on your holster are crucial for security, but they can come loose over time due to constant movement.

  • Check screws regularly. Make it a weekly or monthly habit to inspect all screws and retention adjustments. Use a hand tool to tighten them as needed.
  • Use threadlocker. To prevent screws from backing out, apply a small drop of non-permanent (blue) threadlocker to the threads.
  • Adjust retention properly. The goal is a snug fit that securely holds your firearm during vigorous movement but allows for a clean draw. Make small, incremental adjustments to the screws to find the "sweet spot".

Proper storage is crucial

Kydex is a thermoplastic, which means it can change shape when exposed to heat. Proper storage is vital to prevent warping and ensure a perfect fit.

  • Avoid heat. Never leave your holster in a hot car, attic, or in direct sunlight.
  • Choose a cool, dry spot. Store your holster in a climate-controlled area, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Store it correctly. When not in use, avoid stacking heavy objects on top of your holster that could warp its shape.

When to inspect and when to replace

  • Monthly inspection: A thorough check every month is sufficient for most users. If you carry in harsh environments, inspect more often.
  • Look for damage: Check for any signs of cracking, chipping, or deformation in the Kydex. Pay special attention to high-stress areas like the trigger guard.
  • Assess retention: If you notice your firearm feeling loose or shifting inside the holster, it's time to re-check the retention screws. If the fit can no longer be trusted, it's time for a replacement.
